Heavy fighting continues over control of OMIS (Olympus Mons Interplanetary Spaceport) between the UN and Weltrum Alliance! Distraught over the lack of any progress, the UN sends their newly developed humanoid robotic soldiers named TALOS, specialized for CQC in urban environments.

Progress

Created during my Texturing & Shading II class at Gnomon, I put all my newly gained knowledge from my classes to the test. Being the first assignment we got full creative freedom, I went all out. All aspects are done my me.

Concept

TALOS is a humanoid robot, designed for the harsh and demanding environments of the frontlines. While containing its own AI, each TALOS could be controlled remotely by a puppet master. The two you see above are codenamed CHIPS and PAL. They are part of the UN 3rd Autonomous Divison, nicknamed Iron Men.

From the beginning, for my scene I needed a robust automaton that can traverse and interact with our human-centered designed world. Starting with the head allowed me to discover the personality and style I was going to lean towards. As the setting became more concrete, I was finally able to go forward with a design.

These are my personal drafts, finalizing and figuring out the mechanisms and details of TALOS. While lots are covered by armor plating, important mechanisms like arm and leg movements are created with redundancy. Making 3D block-outs and basic rigs in Maya allowed me to test parts to make sure they would provide the desired movement.

Tests/Progress

Below are renders and screenshots I’ve done throughout development.

Incomplete progress shots of the modeling process (arms were lowered for test renders. modeled in t pose). Fabrics were done in Marvelous Designer.

Concept

Designed a distant future assault rifle. Although it was going to be wielded by TALOS units, ergonomics is designed for humans. Decided on a hydrogen cooled standard rifle with the capability to be belt fed.
